Honor the spiritual teaching, but do not forget that the teaching is here to serve the student. Without you it does not exist, so to speak. It is like the old zen koan, “If a tree falls down in the woods and there is no one to hear it, does it make a sound?”. You breathe life into the words, otherwise they are just a bunch of letters on a page. Reading is the easy part, but the art is revealed the moment you apply those lessons to real word situations. Eventually you have to pick up a paintbrush.
